BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Australia says it will accept 12,000 refugees from war-torn Syria. This will be one of Australia's largest single humanitarian intakes since the Second World War.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott made the announcement today. He says Australia will allocate more spaces in its 13,750 annual quota of intake to those fleeing violence in Syria.
Abbott says this is a carefully considered and "generous" number that Australia could handle. He also says Australia will extend its air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq into Syria.
