BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Its society and economy have improved dramatically during the past 50 years. Tibet has stepped up its economic opening-up and integrated into the domestic market during this time.
Tourism, ethnic handicrafts and traditional Tibetan medicine have become the leading industries in the region. Infrastructure improved with the building of the Qinghai-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet Highways as well as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Five airports in the region now provide 45 domestic routes. Electricity now covers 100 percent of the region's population and telephone lines reach all villages.
