Austria, Germany open borders to migrants

English.news.cn   2015-09-06 16:32:08

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Austria and Germany have admitted thousands of exhausted refugees after the Hungarian government bused them to the border.

Left to walk the last meters into Austria Saturday, the rain-soaked refugees, many from Syria, were then whisked by train and shuttle bus to Vienna. From there they will travel to Germany.

Austria's Interior Minister, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, says about 6,500 refugees have already arrived, and more than 2,000 are already on their way to Munich.

German police said 450 people had already arrived and that up to 10,000 are expected to enter the country Saturday.

About 350,000 refugees and migrants have reached the borders of the European Union this year. The 28-nation EU is searching for solutions amid sharp divisions over burden-sharing.
