BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) --China's top legislature on Saturday adopted amendments to the Criminal Law, featuring fewer death penalties and harsher punishment on terrorism and corruption.
The amendments have removed the death penalty for 9 crimes, including weapons smuggling and counterfeiting currency. The maximum sentence for those convicted of such crimes will subsequently be life imprisonment.
The revised law also has added articles with a view to crack down heavily on terrorism. For example, those who promote and instigate violent terror activities will face more than five years in prison in serious cases.
Other changes including a ban on commutation of the sentence for most corrupt officials, more protection for women, children and the old, as well as harsher punishments for spreading rumours online. The amended Criminal Law will take effect on November 1st.
