BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- China's top legislature--the NPC Standing Committee -- opened its bimonthly session on Monday. Lawmakers will review a draft amendment to the Criminal Law during the six-day session. Seriously corrupt people who have been given two-year suspended death sentences will face life imprisonment after the two years, if China adopts the proposal.
The amendment aims to "safeguard judicial fairness" and prevent "the most corrupt criminals serving shorter jail terms through commutation." Law makers will also consider cancelling cases involving the prostitution of girls under the age of 14.
Qiao Xiaoyang, Director of NPC Law Committee said:"Many lawmakers are calling for the cancellation of the crime of prostituting girls under the age of 14. They think it insults young girls and the punishment is not severe enough. Given the circumstances, the Law Committee is now considering removing the term, and keeping the crime of forcible rape because it will give harsher punishments to criminals."
