BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhuanet) -- China's Defence Ministry says U.S. government and military officials have shown double standards in criticizing Chinese construction on islands in the South China Sea. The ministry also said an increase in the US military presence bad for regional stablility.

"First, China has explained on numerous occasions the purpose and use for construction on Nansha islands. The construction projects on the Nansha islands will allow China to better fulfil its international responsibilities and obligations. These projects will also help maintain the safety of navigation in the region and meet strict environmental standards and requirements.

"Second, the United States remains quiet when countries like the Philippines carry out large-scale construction projects and deploy armaments on China's islands which they illegally occupied."

"But the U.S. makes irresponsible remarks about China's rightful activities on its own soil. This is the a classic case of double standards. We urge the U.S. to stop making such seemingly fair, but false comments," said Yang Yujun, spokesman of China's Ministry of National Defense.

Spokesman Yang Yujun said in a long period of time, the United States have been frequently sending vessels and planes to carry out close-distance reconnaissance in the South China Sea. And recently the U.S. have beef up its military alliance, enhance its military presence and frequently conduct joint military exercises.

Such moves create an intense atmosphere int he region and increase the risks on maritime and air accidents. Yang said China pay high attention to U.S. moves to militarise the South China Sea. He advised U.S. to abide by its commitments on not choosing sides on sovereignty issues and do more things that are good for bilateral and military ties.
