BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli police have fought their way into one of Islam's holiest places east Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque.

According to Israeli officials, the operation was aimed at driving out Palestinian protesters suspected of stockpiling fireworks and petrol bombs in preparation for a riot.

Early Sunday clashes erupted outside the mosque, which is one of the biggest flashpoints in the Middle East. Security forces used stun grenades to disperse the crowd. No serious injuries have been reported. Witnesses say six Palestinians were arrested.
