BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- ISIL used toxic gas in attacks against Kurdish-controlled areas of northeastern Syria in late June. The Kurdish People's Protection Units say the attacks occurred on June the 28th, and targeted the Kurdish-held district of the city of Hasaka and Kurdish positions south of the town of Tel Brak.
The forces said the type of chemical used had not been definitively determined. They said no deaths were reported because soldiers exposed to the gas were quickly taken to hospital. Citing medical sources, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said at least 12 YPG fighters were exposed to the gas in the attack near Tel Brak.
YPG also said its forces had recently captured industrial grade gas masks from ISIL fighters. They see that as evidence that ISIL fighters there were prepared and equipped for chemical warfare.
YPG said it was carrying out an investigation in conjunction with two UK-based research agencies. The researchers say chemical agents were also used in an attack on an Iraqi Kurdish military position on June 21 or 22.
