Japan's lower house of Parliament to vote on bills

English.news.cn   2015-07-16 17:08:09

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Japan's lower house of Parliament is set to vote on a set of security bills today, that if passed, will allow Japan's Self-Defense Forces to fight abroad.

The voting is expected to be preceded by a debate. Five opposition parties have already said they will not be taking part in the vote.

If the bills are passed, they would still need to be approved by the upper house.

On Wednesday, a lower house Committee approved the security bills for debate, amid loud protests from opposition lawmakers.

The special committee is dominated by members of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, or the LDP.

The bills would allow, amongst other things, Japan's Self-Defense Forces to be deployed abroad, to come to the aid of allies under attack.

Shinzo Abe's cabinet approved the bills for introduction to the lower house two months back in mid-May.
