BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the Iranian nuclear deal will safeguard the global nuclear non-proliferation system, and shows that the world can solve international disputes through dialogue.
Wang made these comments after Iran and the Power-five plus one countries reached a historic agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue in Vienna on Tuesday.
"The most significant achievement of the agreement is that it safeguards the international nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Iran made the political promise that it will not develop nuclear weapons, and the other parties accepted the promise through a binding international agreement. At the same time, it still entitles Iran the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy," he said.
The deal is around 100 pages long, with five annexes which specify key areas of the Iranian nuclear issue, including sanctions relief and an action plan, nuclear technology cooperation, the committee to monitor the implementation, capping Iran's nuclear capacity, and the draft of a UN Security Council resolution.
"The most important part is the time-frame and the means for lifting the sanctions against Iran. China has long touted the principle of 'reciprocity' in our experiences in dealing with international and regional disputes. You will see the agreement very soon, it is a very long one. Its key part, the means for lifting sanctions, embodies the principle we proposed of gradual change and reciprocity," Wang said.
Wang also expressed hopes that future international disputes can be addressed through a political solution.
"We absolutely hope that this political settlement, which addressed a major international dispute through dialogue and consultations, can provide an example for nuclear disputes in other regions, including denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," he said.
But the years-long impasse is far from over. Wang warned this will take decades for all parties to live up to the deal, and facilitate peaceful development in the Middle East.
