BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Designer jackets built by 3-D printers? Whatever next? Designer Karl Lagerfeld has combined the latest in technology with haute couture for Chanel's 2016 Autumn-Winter collection in Paris.
Chanel's shows are always lavish affairs and a major celebrity magnet. This one drew American actresses Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore, British singer Rita Ora, and French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis with her daughter Lilly-Rose Depp.
For his setting, designer Karl Lagerfeld chose a casino, which staged a so-called 'cercle privé' where the great and the gilded could gamble before the fashion show began.
And for the first time, 3-D printers were used to make jackets displayed on the catwalk. The technology involves a laser power source layering material together to create a solid structure. Lagerfeld then added material and embroidery to finish the jacket by hand.
And Lagerfeld is leading the charge for modern technology in the fashion industry. "You know fashion is not needed, there are other problems in the world which may be more important, so this is not a problem, but it's an industry and you know, fashion has to go with time. If fashion doesn't go with time, fashion would be lost," said Lagerfeld.
Celebrity-favorite Donatella Versace was among the first to showcase designs at fashion week with a collection of flowing gowns, feminine cuts, and floral adornment.
Chiffon dresses with floral crowns strode onto a glass catwalk filled with orchids. And, with a palette of soft pink, lilac and pale grey, as well as flashes of orange, turquoise and black, the evening gowns featured floral motifs, layered ruffles, and sparkly embellishments.
Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs was the locale, and actresses Sophie Marceau and Emmanuelle Seigner provided the celebrity contingent, for Alexandre Vauthier's brand of steamy sophistication.
Vauthier always finds new ways to reveal and highlight the female body. This time, skin showed through a repeated motif of small parallel gold rods. Pants made of woven strips of fabric were open at the sides to reveal and flatter legs. A blazer covered with gold sequins served as a super-short dress. Flashes of color came in a red snakeskin skirt-suit, or else a rounded fuchsia skirt with transparent black lace top.
Wanting this collection to be both couture and "cool", Vauthier played with more laid-back details such as long leather fringe. A satin bomber jacket had flamingoes embroidered on the back and a lining of fuchsia fur.
This collection also launched Vauthier's brand new shoe line, high-heeled strappy sandals with a mix of fringe, tassels, and gold - obviously as alluring as the rest.
