BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Search and rescue operations continue in Nepal.
But authorities have not been able to establish contact with some of the worst affected areas in the mountainous nation. An interior ministry official says the death toll could reach 5,000.
Thousands of Nepalis have begun fleeing the capital. The Nepalese authorities are trying to cope with a shortage of drinking water, food and electricity, as well as the threat of disease.
The UN Children's Fund says nearly a million children have been "severely affected" by the quake. The biggest concern for them is to get access to clean water and sanitation.
