BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 struck 80 kilometres east of Pokhara in Nepal at 06:11 GMT, with a depth of 20 kilometers.
The quake was felt in India, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Tibet in the southwest of China. 30 minutes after the first quake, a magnitude 7 quake shook again in Nepal, with the depth of 30 kilometres.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the first quake at 7.9, with a depth of 15 kilometres. The earthquake shook buildings in the capital Kathmandu and various buildings, including the walls surrounding Nepal's royal palace collapsed.
The exact number of deaths and injuries are unknown at the moment. In Kathmandu, a historic tower built in the 19th century, collapsed and dozens of bodies were found. The tower was a historic landmark that had been open to visitors for the last 10 years. It was not immediately clear how many people were in the multi-storey tower when it collapsed. Local media reported at least 50 people were trapped in the collapsed tower.
2 Chinese nationals have been confirmed dead.
