BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Germany has commemorated the 70th anniversary of the the liberation of the Buchenwald Nzai concentration camp.

It was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps on German soil.

Some survivors and veterans who took part in the liberation in 1945 attended the ceremony.

The concentration camp was built in July 1937 as a prison for political opponents, Jews and Roma.

After the second World War began, people were deported to Buchenwald from all over Europe.

More than 250,000 people were imprisoned in the camp and its 136 subcamps.

They were forced to work for the German armament industry.

By the end of the war, Buchenwald was the largest concentration camp in Germany.

More than 56,000 people including 11,800 Jews died there, mostly from disease, but also as a result of torture and medical experiments.

Over 8,000 Soviet prisoners of war were executed there. The site is now a memorial housing exhibitions on the history of the camp.
