BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhuanet) – The NPC spokeswoman also told journalists that the national legislature's decision on implementing universal suffrage in the election of Hong Kong's Chief Executive is "unshakable".
"The decision on achieving universal suffrage in Hong Kong is based on provisions in the Basic Law. The National People's Congress Standing Committee made the decision in August last year on the election of the Chief Executive by universal suffrage and on the method of forming the Legislative Council. I want to stress that this decision is unshakable. We hope that Hong Kong can achieve universal suffrage as scheduled in accordance with this decision and the Basic Law so that Hong Kong's constitutional reform can move forward rather than stand still," said Fu Ying, NPC spokeswoman.
Asked about recent frictions between some Chinese mainland tourists and Hong Kong residents, the spokeswoman said tourists and residents should respect each other and think more of each other's goodwill. She said mainlanders and Hong Kong residents are brothers, recalling Hong Kong's generous donation and enthusiasm as volunteers in relief efforts after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. She said the Hong Kong government should ensure the legitimate rights, safety and dignity of all tourists, including those from the mainland.
