BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- People are in shock at the killing of opposition figure Boris Nemtsov. Russia's interior ministry says an investigation has begun following the murder on Friday near the Kremlin.
"At around 23:15, Mr Nemtsov was walking along Bolshoy Kammeny bridge with a friend of his who had arrived from Ukraine. A vehicle pulled up and some shots were fired from it. Four of those shots penetrated his back. Mr Nemtsov suffered injuries which led to his death. At the moment, an investigative team is working at the scene, and eye-witnesses are being questioned. The girl who was with him is being questioned in one of the city's police stations. Everything possible is being done to identify perpetrators of the crime." said Russian Interior Ministry Spokeswoman Elena Alekseeva.
Russian mourners are bringing flowers to the bridge where Boris Nemtsov was shot dead. The pile of flowers continues to grow throughout the day.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the brutal slaying, and put the investigation under presidential control. Putin says the murder could have been a contract killing, and a provocation on the eve of a big opposition protest which Nemtsov had been due to lead.
A number of countries, including the US and Germany, have condemned the murder and called on Putin to bring the killers to justice. Russia's Interfax news agency says investigators are probing whether the murder was meant to destabilize Russia.
