BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The Ukrainian president on Thursday called for UN peacekeepers to be deployed to monitor the ceasefire. The spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said the UN is not taking this step.
"Obviously we've seen the reports. The reports of calls by the Ukrainian authorities for the possible deployment of peacekeepers under UN mandate. The UN has not received any formal request on this issue and as you know UN member states obviously authorise peacekeeping operations through security council resolution and we will be guided accordingly," said Stephane Duharric, spokesman for UN Chief Ban Ki-moon.
