BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- The Lunar New Year falls on Thursday, and the rush to get back home is at its peak. The Ministry of Transport says the number of trips taken during the holiday period will reach about 2.8 billion. And train travel is the most popular choice. Many student volunteers are now assisting passengers in train stations get to their destinations.
At South Train Station in Taiyuan, capital of north China’s Shanxi Province, a volunteer team consisting of 30 college students has been helping passengers for nearly two weeks. They help to answer questions, carry luggage, and walk or guide the elderly to their intended train.
"I saw people in a hurry to get home. I feel so happy when I can help them get on the train. I can’t find the words to express this kind of happiness. I’ve never had such an experience before." Said Ma Yidan, Student Volunteer.
The young volunteer team works full-time at the train station, around ten hours a day. In that time, they can help over a thousand passengers on average every day.
"It’s the spring festival travel peak period. Lots of passengers need help. The volunteers have been working excellently and I want to say thank you to all of them." One passenger said so.
Besides the student volunteer team, the train station also has a care center, providing special services to women with children and elderly people. The care center not only provides facilities for children to enjoy themselves, but also provides a nursing room, wheelchairs and hot water.
The spring festival travel period will last for the next 40 days from February 4th to March 15th. Railway officials say they’re making every effort to ensure a smooth journey home for every passenger.
