BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- After two rehearsals, the annual event is gradually taking shape. The CCTV Spring Festival Gala has long been an integral part of the Chinese new year celebrations. Expectations are mounting for the annual show. The crew are making extra efforts to meet the audience's expectations.
"Something went wrong during rehearsals, but it's actually a good thing. The point of staging rehearsals is to practice and polish our performances. We still have time to make adjustments and make things right," Said Yu Lei, program director.
The gala will be broadcast live at 8pm on February 18th, the lunar new year's eve. The show is 5 hours' long. But the two full dress-rehearsals both went over time.
"Every performance on the stage is important to us, but time is limited. So first step, we'll try to shorten the time of each performance. But if it still exceeds the limit, then we'll have to cut some performances, although we really don't want to," Said Yu.
And when it comes down to which performances should stay or be cut, there is an evaluation system. Organizers distribute questionnaires to the audience at each rehearsal.
High-tech devices also play an important role in the evaluation procedure. A special recorder was set up to monitor the volume and frequency of the audience's applause and laughter.
"The purpose of the system is to winnow down cross-talk shows, sketch comedies, ranking them according to audiences' preference. And it will serve as reference for my team. It can also help performers improve the content of their skits, including roles, plots and how long it should be."
The Spring Festival Gala, or "Chunwan" in Chinese, is an annual variety show broadcast by CCTV. Since 1983, it has been held every year on the eve of the Lunar New Year.
As the longest-running, most-watched and biggest variety show in television history, the CCTV Spring Festival Gala is again to become the focal point of Chinese new year celebrations.
