BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- An online poll claims to have identified the hottest Chinese phrases of 2014. The results of the online poll were announced on Friday after a month of voting. "Rule of law", "anti-corruption", "MH370" and "I’m drunk" were selected as some of the hottest words and terms of 2014.

"Rule of Law", "the New Normal (xin chang tai 新常态)," "Anti-corruption", "MH370" , "Lost (shi 失)"and "I get drunk(wo ye shi zui le 我也是醉了)"-These are the top buzzphrases from six categories for 2014. Over 7,000 people across the country had voted online over the course of a month.‍

"The buzzword anti-corruption reflects that the intensity of China’s anti-corruption efforts have greatly impressed the public. And the buzzphrases "rule of law" and "anti-corruption" are full of positive energy," said a student.

"The term of ‘ I’m drunk’ means one feels frustrated or is left speechless," said another student.

Other buzzphrases included APEC Blue, which refers to the temporary blue sky in Beijing during the APEC meeting, and Xi Dada, a nickname for China’s President Xi Jinping.

"I think Xi Dada is most popular. We call the President Xi Dada quite often," said a student.

"The buzzwords ‘Smog’ and ‘APEC Blue’ have also been mentioned a lot. I wish the blue sky during the APEC meeting in Beijing would continue every day, not just during special events," said a local resident.

The yearly selection of buzzwords started in 2006. It’s run by the Commercial Press, the People’s Daily Online and the National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center.

It aims to select words that best reflect the spirit and diverse social culture of a rapidly changing China.

"As society develops, there have been many new social phenomena and concepts. Correspondingly, many new words and terms have appeared. Most of the annual buzzwords are new," said professor An Zhiwei at Linguistics Institute, Shanxi Academy of Social Sciences.

This year’s selection of buzzwords and phrases made use of more social media to collect votes, including the Microblog Weibo and WeChat.

"Since the yearly selection of buzzwords started in 2006, this has been a time of rapid development of the internet. Words and terms have spread fast through the internet and social media, which have played a very important role," said professor An.

The rapid development of the web and social media provided platforms for people to express their thoughts and feelings. It also reflects that many are creating more channels to air public opinions. People have more avenues to make their voices heard, and hence a broader scope for authorities to detect public concerns.
