BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Beijing's subway system will see a hike in ticket fares effective Sunday. This marks the first hike in subway fares since 2007, prices have remained at a flat rate of 2-RMB, or around 30-US cents, per ticket regardless of distance.
The new pricing system will be based on distance travelled. Estimates put subsidies by the Beijing government given towards the subway system at 20 billion yuan as of last year, that’s over 3 billion dollars.
And if you are in China's capital and plan to travel by the tube, be aware that the underground service will be completely suspended at 9PM Beijing time on Saturday to prepare for the fare increase on Sunday.
