BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The water diversion project can also ease one of the most drought-ridden municipal cities in northern China - Tianjin.
Billions of cubic meters of water are travelling through thousands of kilometers of canals to reach the city. The central route of the water diversion project has over twenty-four kilometers of canals and is expected to deliver eight-hundred million cubic meters of water to Tianjin over the next year.
The central route diverts water from the Danjiangkou reservoir on the Hanjiang River in Hubei via new canals near the west edge of the Huanghuaihai Plain to flow through the Hebei province to Beijing. Tianjin will also draw water from the trunk line near Xushui in Hebei province.
Tianjin, a municipal city with a population of nearly eight million, has had problems with water supply for quite some time. Thanks to the water diversion project, the city now can enjoy a consistent water supply.
