BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Amid a swell of controversy, backlash, confusion and threats, Sony Pictures has broadly released 'The Interview' online.
"The Interview" became available on a variety of digital platforms on Wednesday afternoon, a day after Sony and independent theatres agreed to release it in over 300 venues on Christmas.
The film tells the story of an assassination attempt on DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. Last week, Sony said it decided to cancel the film's release due to threats posted online by a group of hackers calling itself Guardians of Peace. The group claimed responsibility for a massive cyber-attack on Sony.
The decision to release the film on multiple platforms is an unprecedented counterstrike against the hackers. US President Barack Obama praised the release of the controversial comedy while on vacation in Hawaii.
