BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- British athletics great Sebastian Coe launched his bid for the presidency of world governing body, the IAAF. The two-time champion in the Olympic 1,500 metres says he wants to attract more young people to the sport.
Coe, the current IAAF vice-president, hopes to succeed current president Lamine Diack, who will step down in August. Speaking at a press conference in central London to outline his manifesto, Coe called for the introduction of an "IAAF Street Athletics" circuit in major cities around the world to attract new fans.
"It really does reach out to a very different and new audience. I think we shouldn't be too theological, of course the centrepiece of our events and championships have to be in the arena but if you look at the way we sometimes showcase the marathon and sometimes the race walks in city centres, these are things that we really do need to enhance and make sure really deliver advantage to our sport," Coe said.
