China begins to issue ten-year visas to US citizens

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- One of the practical deals being made between the US and China during the fruitful visit of US president Barack Obama to Beijing is the long-term visa policy with multiple entries, which is expected to boost exchanges between the two countries. Under the agreement, tourists and business people will be able to acquire multiple entry visas valid for ten years, while students will get visas with a five-year validity. On Wednesday, Edmund Downie became the first American citizen to receive a ten-year visa to China.

"It is exciting, it's ten years," Downie said. "And now I'm able to travel to China until November 11th, 2024. So that's nine years longer than I already have."

"I believe the new visa agreement between China and the US is a major step," Ruan Ping, Consul General of Chinese Embassy in the US, said. "It will greatly facilitate people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. With more exchanges, people will understand each other better and bilateral friendships will be fostered."
