BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese opera has long inspired many of the country's writers and artists. And hoping to tap that ancient culture to inspire others, light rail trains in the Malaysian capital are featuring short poems as part of a campaign to popularize Chinese literature. The initiative is part of the Chinese Literature Festival that recently kicked off in the country.
A new window into Chinese culture. Here in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, light rail trains have swapped advertisements for Chinese short poems. Now commuters can sample a bit of literature on their way to work or school.
"We live in a multi-cultural society in Malaysia so these poems can help us understand Chinese literaturem," said a commuter.
"I really like it, ethnic Malays can understand Chinese culture through the Malaysian translations," a commuter said.
With translations next to Chinese characters, commuters can take a break and sample the beauty of Chinese short poems. Written by six Chinese poets from Malaysia, the literary works convey an upbeat mood and energetic spirit.
"I think Chinese culture, it's in our blood. We want the next generation to be raised in our native culture. There are a lot of truly valuable teachings in our culture. It provides guidance on how to deal with issues and how to treat others," said Cheng Dai-Zheng, adviser of Federation of Chinese Association Malaysia.
With Malay and English having long been the dominant languages in Malaysia, Chinese is starting to grow in use and popularity, allowing all Malaysians to get a better understanding of Chinese culture.
