BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Maldives is the second stop on President Xi Jinping’s four-nation tour. Xi Jinping becomes the first Chinese president to visit since the two countries set up diplomatic relations 42 years ago.

China is now the largest source of tourists in the Maldives. And President Xi Jinping’s visit is expected to expand cooperation into even more fields.

"With concerted efforts, the economic and trade ties between the two countries have entered a phase of development recently. China has helped with several construction projects in the Maldives, including the foreign ministry building, and the national museum. This has been totally free of cost. We’ve also helped the country build a thousand residential homes. Now the program has entered the second stage of development," said Chinese ambassador to Maldives Wang Fukang.
