Beijing instructor turns teaching into a fine art

BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- It’s the Teachers’ Day on Sepetember 10th in China. We visited the Experimental High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University to meet one teacher who’s making a difference.

Opening an inspiring chapter for students in the new semester.

Wu Di teaches fine arts at this high school in Beijing. Although the subjects include Chinese Opera, painting, calligraphy and dances drawn from ancient times, he has found ways to make it lively and interesting for his young students.

"Through my class, I want to let my students experience things that they’d otherwise rarely see or learn about. Teaching is like seeing the little plants you have sowed grow up into big trees. But sowing the seed at the very beginning is very important. I hope not only fine arts teachers, but teachers in other courses will combine their useful knowledge together. I think we are not just teaching knowledge, we are also teaching culture. And letting students love Chinese culture and be confident of their own culture. And as for teachers, we should also keep learning and preparing ourselves. The better trained you are, the more you will have to offer your students," said Wu.

Wu Di has also created his own little museum near his classroom for the students to learn more.

Filled with traditional Chinese relics, it offers students a chance to explore their cultural history -- and discover new inspirations.

"A good teacher is never boring. They find a variety of ways to inspire us. Mr. Wu is that kind of teacher. He toured us around the school’s museum, and made us interested in that way of learning Chinese culture," a student said.

"Before, we thought fine arts were just about painting. But Mr. Wu’s class is quite different and unique. He more emphasizes teaching us how to appreciate Chinese traditional culture," another student said.

Many teachers like Wu Di have devoted a lot to education. They care about their students and continue to improve teaching skills. Their dedication deserves great respect as it consolidates the development of the society and the prosperity of the nation.
