Palestinian child killed in renewed airstrikes

English.news.cn   2014-08-09 09:23:37

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Israel and militants from Gaza have resumed cross-border attacks after talks to extend the 72-hour ceasefire that ended on Friday failed. A Palestinian child has been killed and nine others wounded in fresh air strikes.

A spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry says the child and four adults were in a mosque in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. He says five more were wounded in other airstrikes. Israel says Hamas fighters from Gaza fired first after the temporary truce expired, launching more than 20 rockets toward Israel. Most landed in open fields, and Israel’s "Iron Dome" interceptor system brought down two. No injuries or damage were reported.

Police in Gaza say Israel launched 10 airstrikes. They also reported fire from Israeli tanks on northern Gaza and from Israeli gunboats at the central area of the strip.
