BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- It’s been six days since the magnitude-6.5 quake jolted Ludian County in Zhaotong City. As of seven p.m. Thursday, the death toll had risen to 615, with 114 still missing and more than three thousand one hundred injured. A total of 230 thousand people have been evacuated.
Rescuers are continuing to comb through quake rubble after the expiration of the 72 hour "golden period." In a press briefing on Thursday evening, local relief headquarters said more than 70 hygiene and quarantine monitoring stations had been set up across the quake zone.
More than 360 quarantine personnel are on hand. So far, no disease or public health incidents have been reported. However, experts warn the area is prone to infectious intestinal diseases, as the water in some reservoirs and water stations is still below drinkable standards.
Authorities have pledged to monitor the quality and ensure clean and safe water for everyone. On Friday morning, five thousand tents had been transported by trains to Zhaotong Railway Station. And they’ll be dispatched to the areas in need by trucks and helicopter.
