20,000 volunteers will help during Nanjing Youth Olympics

English.news.cn   2014-07-23 20:14:17

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Nanjing Youth Olympics is now less than a month away. And organizers are busy putting the final touches on things. Now to make sure the Games are a success, the committee needed the help of thousands of volunteers -- and more than 20-thousand of them will be helping the broadcasting teams.

Among the duties that the volunteers will be involved in is providing the Public address announcing at the venues. Over the last few days thay have been doing numerous tests to make sure that all the broadcasting equipment inside the arenas are fully functionining. Once the games begin, they will be asked to introduce the athletes as well as provide results to the crowd in attendance.

The broadcasting volunteers are all third-year students from Communication University of China, Nanjing. And command of many languages are needed. English and French are the official Olympic languages, and because the games are in China, Mandarin will also need to be spoken by the announcers. And with terminology different in all three languages, the volunteers need to be well versed in the vernacular of their different sports.

Security will be increased during Games

And with athletes from all over the world converging on Nanjing, hotels in the area will be extremely busy. The 25 official youth olympic hotels have also updated their facilities to provide a more modern look during the event. The chefs are also busy creating meals, and that could get tricky with participants from 204 nations arriving -- and no two competitors share the same tastes.

One of the most important things that the establishments need to be aware of is security. The hotels have all conducted fire-drills, counter-terrorism exercises and emgency evacuation procedures in the lead up to the games.

Summer heat will make it hard for volunteers

Organizers held a meeting with more than 350 volunteer at Nanjing Sanjiang University. It was there, that the helpers were told how to prepare for the summer heat in Nanjing. And they also went through a quick run-through of Nanjing torch relay procedures.
