BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Former World Cup-winning captain Dunga has been appointed as the new coach of the Brazilian national football team. Dunga, who is now in his second stint as boss of the Selecao replaces the departed Luiz Felipe Scolari.
The 50-year-old is a legend in the country after making 91 appearances for the Selecao and leading the side to World Cup glory as captain in 1994. But he has not had the same results as a manager -- in his previous four-year spell as coach of the national team, he could only take Brazil to the quarterfinals of the 2010 tournament, as they lost to Netherlands. Dunga replaces Scolari, the country's 2002 World Cup winning coach, who resigned after overseeing a heartbreaking conclusion to the 2014 tournament. They finished fourth after losing to the Dutch again in the third-place play-off. Dunga received heavy criticism during his last stint as manager because of his conservative tactics and physical style of play, but this time he is determined to put a smile back on the fans' faces.
"I will not sell a dream, its reality, and reality needs a lot of work when you create big expectations for fans. Football is unpredictable, nothing is definite. You have to conquer each day, each second, each minute. More and more football is becoming more alike around the world, there are many competent, dedicated people with a lot of work, we cannot think that we are the best. No. We have been the best once, we have to try to get there again, we have talent for this but we cannot, we have to be humble and recognise that other nations worked for many years to achieve their goals. We must work arduously to conquer once again the right to be among the best of the world," Dunga said.
