13 dead after heavy downpours lead to mudslides

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Although super typhoon Rammasun has weakened to a tropical depression, its effects remain. Ongoing downpours brought by the storm have caused several landslides, mudslides and mountain floods in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province. So far, 13 people have been killed and 9 remain missing in southern Yunnan's Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Dehong.

Rescuers are working hard to remove mud and rocks from roads, after a mudslide blockaded the way to Huna Village in Mangshi City. The mudslide took place on Monday morning, crushed and damaged dozens of houses and caused power disruptions. Hundreds of villagers were forced to leave their home and take temporary shelter in nearby villages.

"Now we are using excavators to change the route of the road. This section is expected to be opened on Wednesday," said Mangshi city road department section chief Yang Jisheng.

One of the three roads waiting to be opened is now the only accessible path for relief workers and materials to the village, as victims are badly in need of relief supplies including tents and waterproof clothing.

But rescue work isn’t easy...More than one hundred rescuers trying to reach the village are now stranded. And due to a lack of equipment, rescuers are using only shovels and their bare hands to dig through debris.

As Yunnan has entered the annual flood season, the mountainous province may face additional mudslides and other disasters in the weeks to come.
