BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a nuclear energy cooperation deal with Argentina In Buenos Aires.
Putin and his Argentine counterpart, Cristina Fernandez, announced the Russian atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, would be involved with the construction of two nuclear power units in Argentina. Fernandez said a Russian delegation is scheduled to visit one of Argentina’s largest shale reserves.
Putin is on a six-day Latin America tour. It’s already taken him to Nicaragua and Cuba. Next stop is Brazil for the BRICS summit. Putin’s also expected to attend the World Cup Final. The president’s tour is aimed at building Russia’s influence in the region. He hopes the deal with Argentina will help boost trade ties.
"For now we can say that more than 20 percent of the hydro-electric energy in Argentina is created using machines from Russia. Our companies are looking to continue and build on their role, and help modernize the energy sector here. This will be achieved through the construction of new power plant units," he said.
