Bilateral ties of China and U.S. troubled by recent frictions

English.news.cn   2014-07-10 16:11:11

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The complex relationship between the world’s two largest economies has recently been soured by a series of disputes, and Washington’s irresponsible and biased comments. Relations took a hit this year when the US became involved in China’s maritime territorial disputes.

In the East China Sea, the US took the side of Japan, and blamed China for escalating tensions there. It also backed Vietnam and the Philippines in their territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea. Cyber security has recently become another flash point.

In May, the US indicted five Chinese military officers for so-called commercial espionage. China rejected the charge, and pointed to revelations about the US government’s own widespread surveillance program, which included hacking and spying on the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Union, the International Atomic Energy Agency and almost all foreign governments.

Disagreement over currency exchange rates have also emerged between China and the US. The exchange rate for the Chinese currency, the Renminbi, has increased by 2.4 percent since the beginning of 2014, and 17 percent since 2010. However, the US still pushing China to do more, saying the RMB is under-valued.
