Original Chinese opera productions on the rise

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The ‘Rickshaw Boy’ has stirred some debate about whether it's appropriate to combine western opera style with China's classic literature, as imported opera styles are undoubtedly gaining ground in the country. And in recent years, Chinese opera practitioners have been working hard to produce works that are original to their home soil.

Currently there are 38 opera troupes and agencies all over China, a force that is speeding up the development of opera in the country. In 2013, almost 20 operas were brought to the stage, which is considered a leading number by global standards. However, most of them didn't achieve satisfactory results at the box office.

"Creators of Chinese operas are all contemporary. But their fame and popularity are far less than western repertoire." said Wei Lanfen, Director, Production Dept. of NCPA.

In order to improve the recognition of this art form, opera troupes have been hosting lectures, salons, and college programs. Recently, over 2 thousand people have enjoyed a free opera performance produced by the China National Opera House. But for Chinese contemporary opera practitioners, how to create music and stories that appeal to home audiences still remains a tough task.
