BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Costa Rica have pulled off a surprise defeat against Italy, winning one-nil in the Group D match-up.
Striker Bryan Ruiz headed the ball home just before the halftime break to give Costa Rica the lead. Junior Diaz supplied the cross from the left in the 44th minute and Ruiz headed it onto the underside of the crossbar, beating Italy's goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon. Neither side was able to change the score in the second half.
The win means Costa Rica are through to the next stage, while England are out of the tournament. Italy will play Uruguay next Tuesday, to decide which other team from the group will advance to the round of 16.
