BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhuanet) -- France have beaten Honduras 3-nil in a Group E match. France striker Karim Benzema was the hero of the day.
He scored a penalty shortly before halftime to give his side a 1-nil lead. In the 48th minute, Benzema thumped a volley against the far post. It came back, and hit goalkeeper Noel Valladares on the back before the keeper tried to claw it out. The new goal line technology said it’s in. Then in the 72th minute, Benzema smashed the third goal into the top of the net.
Earlier, Switzerland dramatically came from behind and beat Ecuador 2-1 in their Group E opener, with a goal deep in stoppage-time by Haris Seferovic. And in less than an hour from now, two-time world champion Argentina will open their World Cup campaign against debutants Bosnia and Herzegovina.
