China condemns 'groundless accusations'

English.news.cn   2014-06-14 16:05:50

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhuanet) -- China’s deputy permanent UN representative, Wang Min, has criticized Vietnam and The Philippines over their actions in maritime disputes with China. Wang was speaking at a meeting of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, in New York on Friday.

Wang says Vietnam must respect China’s sovereignty, and immediately stop all forms of interference in China’s operations in the South China Sea. He called on Vietnam to withdraw personnel and boats from the area around a Chinese oil rig, and return to a peaceful path. Wang also spoke about the Philippines, accusing the country of illegally seizing some of the Xisha islands. Wang said the Philippines is attempting to legalize its illegal behavior by appealing to an international arbitration tribunal. According to the terms of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, China has already announced in 2006 that it will not accept any mandatory solution over territorial disputes. China says it has the right as a sovereign nation and member of the convention to refuse such a verdict. Wang says China’s stance on the dispute with the Philippines will not change.
