BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Maria Sharapova from Russia has won her second French Open title in three years. During Saturday’s final, the Russian player defeated fourth seed Simona Halep from Romania 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in a marathon encounter which lasted three hours and two minutes.
Sharapova has struggled with her serve this week and had 12 double-faults in the final. But she was able to hold off Halep, and hold her serve in the final game, with steady groundstrokes that kept the Romanian on the run. It is the Russian player’s fifth grand slam title after Wimbledon 2004, the 2006 US Open, the 2008 Australian Open and her first Roland Garros title two years ago.
