Obama, Putin meet at D-Day event on Ukraine

English.news.cn   2014-06-07 09:00:54

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhuanet) -- US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Valdimir Putin have met, as world leaders commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy, in the north of France.

Obama and Putin had a short conversation on Friday inside the French chateau where they attended a leaders’ lunch, marking the first time they have spoken face-to-face since the crisis in Ukraine began. A White House official says the two leaders held an informal conversation, instead of a formal, bilateral meeting.

The conversation lasted 10 to 15 minutes. The official said Obama urged Putin to recognize Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko as Ukraine’s leader, and to cut off arms supplies to rebels.
