Sao Paulo subway workers strike disrupts travel

English.news.cn   2014-06-06 09:22:41

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Commuters in Brazil's biggest city, Sao Paulo, are facing long delays and massive disruption, after subway workers went on strike, rejecting the latest salary hike proposal. The strike has stranded many of the 3.5 million people who use Sao Paulo’s public transport systems on an average weekday.

The government’s transit authority says Sao Paulo was seeing its worst traffic of the year so far, though the city is known for congested roadways and crowded public transport. The strike comes days before Sao Paulo hosts the opening World Cup match between Brazil and Croatia.

In recent weeks, World Cup host cities like Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador have all seen a wave of strikes from teachers, police officers and bus drivers, demanding better salaries.
