BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhuanet) -- In the Balkans, Serbia and Bosnia are struggling with the worst flooding in more than a century. At least 35 people have died in five days of flooding caused by unprecedented torrential rain. More victims are expected to be found as the flood waters recede.
Many towns and villages are entirely underwater, thousands of hills have been flattened by landslides. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes.
Local officials are comparing the destruction to devastation by war. The EU has activated its civil protection mechanism in response to the Balkans crisis and 14 European states have sent aid and equipment to the stricken area.
