BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Ukraine’s Parliament has held a closed-door meeting on a proposal by anti-government activists in eastern Ukraine on holding a referendum for independence. A resolution approved by the parliament declared that such a referendum would be illegal.
It ruled that according to the country’s constitution, only the president has the right to determine whether to hold a referendum.
Meanwhile the U.S. has also rejected the proposed referendum. Speaking at a news conference with EU Foreign Policy chief Catherine Ashton, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington is deeply concerned about efforts by anti-government activists in Donetsk and Luhansk to organize, what he described as, a contrived and bogus independence referendum on May 11.
Kerry said he would meet with his European counterparts next week to discuss what steps they should take next.
