BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhuanet) -- In the latest effort to mediate the Syrian crisis, China has invited Syrian Opposition leader, Ahmad Jarba on a three day visit to Beijing. Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Ahmad Jarba, who heads the National Coalition of Syrian Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, on Thursday afternoon.
Both sides exchanged views on the situation in Syria, and discussed how to resolve the conflict politically. China has maintained that a political settlement is the only way out of the Syrian crisis. China has played host to both government and opposition delegations, showing that it’s not taking sides in the crisis, in order to promote the peace process in a balanced way.
Ahmad Jarba has come at the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two met earlier in Switzerland, where two rounds of Geneva peace talks failed to bring tangible results. Wang has since called for an early start to the third round of peace talks.
"This is the first time that our opposition party has visited China. Chinese and the Syrian peoples have a long history of friendship. China has supported people who are oppressed. The Syrian Crisis has now entered into its fourth year. The political and humanitarian impact has reached an intolerable level. The National Coalition of the Syrian Opposition and Revolutionary Forces supports a political solution to the crisis, we support people seeking their rightful interests and rights. We are looking forward to exchanging views with China," he said.
