English.news.cn   2014-04-15 19:29:57

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Safe tap water is once running for 2.4 million residents in northwest Chinese city of Lanzhou, after a pollution incident. But, reconstruction is now under preparation, but locals still have doubts about the cause of the pollution and are concerned about tap water safety.

Machines are now cleaning up the contaminated site and local officials say the pipelines will soon be replaced. In order to improve the efficiency of reconstruction, authority in Lanzhou has planned to relocate more than 90 households whose house is within the demolition sites. Local government has allocated new apartment and compensation of cashes to those agree to relocate. Reconstruction work is expected to start in late April and end in mid May.

Local authorities say samples collected on Sunday and Monday show that traces of benzene, a cancer-inducing chemical, have fallen below the alert level. The local government has lifted all emergency measures... Excessive levels of benzene were detected in the town’s water supply on Friday. Authorities warned citizens to not drink tap water for 24 hours.
