BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party is taking a strong early lead in the country's local elections which opened Sunday.
Turkey’s private NTV television station reported that with over 18 percent of the municipal votes counted by early evening, Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party was at almost 50 percent of the vote. If the initial trend holds up, it would considerably brighten the outlook for Erdogan, who had gone on a weeks-long campaign marathon.
The Prime Minister is said to be eyeing a run for the presidency in August, the first time voters will directly elect their head of state.
