BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhuanet) -- World leaders have released a communique as the Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague came to a close on Tuesday.
They have urged more efforts to prevent nuclear material from falling into the hands of terrorists.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced the communique. One major point is to minimize stocks of dangerous nuclear materials.
"I am pleased that the 53 countries and four international organizations here have confirmed that commitment to continue reducing stocks of dangerous nuclear material -- highly enriched uranium and plutonium. A number of countries have announced their intention to hand over their highly enriched uranium to the US, where it will be downgraded. As chair of this summit, I naturally welcome this announcement." Rutte said.
The communique says it’s every country’s fundamental responsibility to keep secure all nuclear and other radioactive materials.
It cautions that many challenges remain, and stresses the need for increased international cooperation in maintaining nuclear security.
58 world leaders have participated in the two-day event to seek ways to boost nuclear security around the globe.
The summit is the third of its kind. Since the first in Washington in 2010, the number of countries that have enough material to build a nuclear weapon has fallen from 39 to 25.
The next summit will be held in Chicago in 2016.
