BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Japan is set to hand over to the US more than 315 kilograms of weapons-grade plutonium, and a supply of highly enriched uranium.
US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz says the material will be transformed into "proliferation-resistant forms". A senior Japanese official says the move is part of Japan's efforts to prevent proliferation and possible abuse of nuclear material by militant groups.
Japan originally received the material from the US and Britain in the 1960s for use in research. The amount is just a tiny fraction of Japan's overall stockpile. Japan holds 9.3 tons of lesser-grade plutonium that it could easily weaponize in a matter of months.
