BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhuanet) -- There are still two days to go before the Nuclear Security Summit 2014 kicks off at the Hague. This year’s summit, which will take place on March 24th and 25th, will identify ways of preventing nuclear terrorism around the world. Representatives from more than 50 countries and regions are going to take part in the meetings. The Summit is led by Piet de Klerk, the lead coordinator and negotiator from the host country, the Netherlands.
In an interview with CCTV, De Klerk said the Summit wants to help the world recognize the important role nuclear materials can play in human society, be it in boosting medical or power capabilities. But he added that the threat of nuclear terrorism exists, and that materials falling in the wrong hands could have potentially disastrous consequences.
He identified nuclear security as a top priority for countries around the globe. During the interview, De Klerk also hailed the efforts made in the past two summits in Washington and Seoul, and praised China for its constructive role in ensuring nuclear safety and security.
"I think China has much to gain by doing its utmost both in the area of nuclear security, which is the topic of this summit, as well as in nuclear safety, to make sure that China is among the leaders in the field, when it comes to safety measures and security measures. Especially the security measures are very important to make sure that terrorists cannot get there," lead coordinator for NSS 2014 said.
